BLK360 Frequently Asked Questions: Part 1

The BLK360 makes 3D scanning simple, by answering some of the most commonly asked questions, we aim to make the use of the BLK360 simple too.


1. Can I get a demo?

We are currently able to offer BLK360 demos in many, but not all regions throughout our major territories. To find out if a demo is available in your region, please fill out a contact form.

You can also visit our video library where we cover a range of topics including set up, on-site scanning, importing data and how to work with the data post-scan.

If you’re attending any industry events this year, you can stop by the Leica BLK360 booth for a demo, as well. So far, we’re scheduled to be at AIA in April and HxGn Live in June.


2. Can the BLK360 operate without Internet access?


Yes! The BLK360 generates its own Wi-Fi hotspot that can connect to an iPad Pro or Desktop computer from up to 50m away. By connecting an iPad Pro to the Wi-Fi during operation, a user can review scans and change the BLK360’s settings on the fly.

The Wi-Fi hotspot is also the primary means of transferring scans from the BLK360 to iPad and desktop devices for registration and processing.

Neither of these processes require internet access.



3. What’s the difference between ReCap Pro Desktop and ReCap Pro Mobile?


RECAP Pro for mobile is an iPad exclusive app built specifically for the BLK360 scanner. It’s included at no additional cost with a subscription to Recap Pro and allows users to operate and adjust their BLK360 scanner remotely in the field. It is also the fastest and easiest way to transfer scans from your BLK360 unit into the RECAP desktop program.

After transferring your scan to ReCap Pro for Desktop, you can clean and edit your point cloud before exporting it for use in other Autodesk design tools.


4. What file type does the BLK360 produce? What file types are compatible with ReCap/BLK data?


Depending on the workflow, the BLK360 will produce a few different file formats:

  • If you're using ReCap Pro Mobile, your file type will be the standard *.rcp format. Once you’re in ReCap Pro on your desktop, you can export scans to other file types, like e57 and PTS
  • If you're using the Leica BLK360 iPad Pro App, the export is as an .e57 file. If you plan to import directly into Cyclone Register, the file format is *.imp. You can also export out the panoramic image and floor plan in a .dxf format.
  • If you download using the BLK Data Manager, the scans export as a *.blk, which can only be imported to Cyclone or Register360 at this point in time.

Other formats like PTX, FLS, STL and OBJ aren’t directly compatible but can be obtained from additional software (Register360, 3DReshaper, etc.)
