Applied Science with the BLK360

"None of the students had ever done laser scanning before. In 2.5 hours the scanning group had finished their work on their own. The result was 15 scans, including scans on each of the three inner balconies. All the scans were (to my great surprise) registered properly on the iPad."

Dear Leica Geosystems,

Just a small success story related to the BLK360:

Attached you will find a photo of a group of students taking part in a course at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Raseborg, Finland. The course is called "Instruments for Monitoring Old Structures" and is a collaboration between three universities in Finland, Sweden and Estonia.

As a part of the 1 week long course we used both the Leica BLK360 and a drone to model the old wooden church of Snappertuna (in front of which the group is standing), built of wood in 1689.

Now the amazing thing: We started the interior scanning with me introducing the scanning workflow and best practices for 15 minutes. Then I oversaw the next 3 scans. After that I left the group of students responsible for the scanning to themselves, and went out to fly the drone with another group.

None of the students had ever done laser scanning before.

In 2.5 hours the scanning group had finished their work on their own. The result was 15 scans, including scans on each of the three inner balconies. All the scans were (to my great surprise) registered properly on the Ipad (see screen dump from ReCap). Back at the university we imported the project into ReCap Pro, and there was very little cleaning to do until the merged point cloud was ready for Revit.

As my company, Coastwise Ltd, got the scanner less than a month ago, I don't have much experience yet (this is our first laser scanner), and I was prepared for a long night's work to manually merge and tidy up the scans. Fortunately that was not needed.

Happy Leica BLK360 owner

Thanks for sharing that with us, Romi. Making Reality Capture user-friendly was exactly the goal that the deisgners and engineers at Leica Geosystems and Autodesk set out to achieve, and it is great to see the combination of the BLK360 and Recap Pro put to use this way.

Please keep us in the loop on your future projects.
