Introducing the Leica BLK360

A portable laser reality capture solution that generates a full 3D representation of any space in just minutes. By combining 3D point cloud technology with panoramic photography, the BLK360 creates a full 3D representation with precision measurements, full color rendering, and even thermal imaging.

How it Works:

  • The BLK360 uses LIDAR technology to determine distances by measuring the time it takes for light that is projected outwards to bounce back to the BLK360.
  • The BLK360 captures up to 360,000 individual measurements every second as it rotates 360 degrees over the course of 3 minutes.
  • View the resulting point cloud on your iPad or transfer to your desktop, so you can revisit your worksite in 3D any time without having to leave the office.
  • You can even open your point clouds directly in your design software of choice and start designing within the existing site.

Spherical camera 360 Imagery

When a scan is initiated, the BLK360's three 5 megapixel cameras combine to capture a slice of a full dome image. Then, the BLK360 rotates ~33° and the three cameras capture the next slice. These images are stitched together to create a full dome, 360°HZ x 300°V image.

This first step of the scanning process takes about 30 seconds, and the operator can watch as the images are captured via Recap Mobile Professional or the Leica BLK360 controller app.

​In this case, a picture is worth 1000 words.  A 3-dimensional point cloud is just that: a cloud of points in 3D space that has additional information assigned to every point. Some typical attributes included with each point are intensity (a measure of reflection) or RGB (color) information. 

The image shown was taken at our Heerbrugg, Switzerland facility with a BLK360. The points on the left side of the picture contain true color information, those on the right contain intensity.


BLK360 accuracy specs Accuracy

A laser scanner calculates 3D XYZ coordinates using 3 measurements - a horizontal angle, a vertical angle and a slope distance from the scanner center to the measured point. This is refered to as a "polar" measurement. Add a bit of trigonometry and you quickly come to XYZ or Cartesian coordinates.

In simple terms, the 3D accuracy of a laser scanner is affected by the accuracy of the polar measurements. The BLK360 has 3D point accuracies of 6mm @ 10m and approximately 8mm @20 m (1/4" at 33' and approx 1/3" at 66' respectively), 1 sigma. This makes the BLK360 a perfect as-built measurement tool, especially when you consider you can collect up to 360,000 measurements per second AND full HDR imagery at the push of a button.

Think of it as bringing the jobsite back to the office.


The BLK360 features a removable and rechargable li-ion battery that last for 40+ full scans (imagery, laser scan, thermal).

BLK360 uses iPad Pro 12.9" as controller Controller

For maximum flexibility, the BLK360 can be completely controlled using an iPad Pro 12.9" and 10.5". No more squinting to read a tiny display or wondering how your imagery and point cloud looks until you get back home in the office.

When you intitate a scan from an iPad Pro™ you can watch as your spherical image is built on the first pass, then preview the completed image when its done. If you have a shadow or black spot in your scan, you'll know in real time right on the jobsite.

BLK360 scanner settings Controls

Almost everything in the BLK360 is managed for you. Imagery, thermal panorama, HDR are all set to default settings by the app. For the more experienced user, some settings can be set manually, such as scan resolution.

The BLK360 comes with a built-in thermal imaging sensor. In the 30 seconds while the BLK360 is capturing its spherical HDR imaging, a 70°​V x 360°HZ thermal image panorama is also being created. The IR sensor is precisely aligned to the HDR sensors and the laser scanner. But wait, there's more! The IR sensor doesn't only give you a color scale, it is calibrated within +/- 1°C. The perfect reality capture tool for energy audits.

LED Indicator

Developed by the same studio that designs interior lighting for Audi and Mercedes, the BLK360 uses its LED ring to communicate its status.

The BLK360 comes ready to work, even if you forget to charge your iPad Pro. In autonomous mode, the BLK360's onboard memory will store up to 100 full reality-captures: Imagery, laser point cloud and infrared panorama. When connected to an iPad Pro, your storage limit is only the amount of memory on your tablet.

If you are scanning a relatively simple space without a lot of obstructions or setups, you can operate the scanner using its single button and on-board memory.

Press the button once to turn it on, and again to scan. 

When the scanner stops rotating and the LED ring is solid green, move to the next scan position (if there is one) and press the button again to take your next scan.

If you are scanning a more complex space, you will probably want to use an iPad Pro™ to control the BLK360.


Measuring range of the BLK360 is 0.6 - 60m at 78% albedo Range

Measuring range for any laser scanner depends on having a somewhat reflective surface. Based on our many years experience in laser scanning, we spec'd the BLK360 to work in the range from 60cm out to 60meters (2' - 200'). As a rule of thumb, the laser reflects better off light colored surfaces. Our specification is based on an "albedo" of 78%, something like a light colored interior wall.

3 scan density settings on BLK360 Scan Resolution

The BLK360 can be set to capture more or fewer measurement points based on the requirements of the task at hand. Think of the scan resolution as the grid you will measure on a wall 10 meters (33') away.


Low   = 1 measurement every 20mm (0.8") in HZ and V

Mid   = 1 measurement every 10mm (0.4") in HZ and V

High = 1 measurement every   5mm  (0.25") in HZ and V

A high-res scan can easily capture between 50-80 million points in 3 minutes and be over 1GB.

1 kg and compact Weight/Size

Despite its rugged aluminum housing, the BLK360 is still under 1kg (2.2  lbs). At 100mm diameter (4") and 165mm high (6.5"), it is slightly easier to transport than your typical laser scanner. This coffee cup helps put things in perspective.

Integrated WiFi Hotspot 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Hotspot

The BLK360 acts as its own WiFi hotspot; there is no need to have WiFi on a jobsite to capture reality. Countless engineering hours were spent ensuring the array of WiFi antennas optimize performance. The integrated wireless LAN  supports the 802.11 b/g/n standards.

Just to be clear - if you are using cloud based collaboration tools you will need to provide internet access to transmit your reality capture data back to the office.
